In the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin sponsored a lottery to raise funds for cannons to defend Philadelphia against the British. The oldest lottery still operating is the Dutch state-owned Staatsloterij, established in 1726.<\/p>\n
Despite their enormous popularity, there are a number of disadvantages to lotteries. One is that they encourage compulsive gambling. Another is that they have a regressive impact on lower-income communities. A third is that they are often addictive. Lottery advertising is known for presenting misleading information about odds of winning, inflating the value of money won (lottery jackpots are usually paid in annual installments over 20 years and inflation dramatically erodes their current value) and appealing to irrational psychological motivations.
