Poker is a card game where the objective is to win money from other players by staking (betting) their cards. The player with the best hand wins the pot. During betting players can raise their bets or simply “check”. Raising means they want to add more money to the pot and can only do so after other players call, fold, or even raise their own bets. Checking means the player does not want to increase their bet and is just trying to see if someone else has a better hand. With good bluffing skills a player can sometimes win with a weak hand.<\/p>\n
In the case of a poker game, the dealer deals each player 2 personal cards and then places 5 community cards face up on the table. Players then take turns to reveal their hands, starting with the player who placed the first bet of the round.<\/p>\n
Players then compare their hands to determine who has the highest one. Some of the most common hands include: Straight: 5 consecutive cards of the same rank; Full house: 3 matching cards of one rank plus 2 matching cards of another rank; Flush: 5 cards of the same suit; Two pair: two cards of the same rank, plus two unmatched cards; and three of a kind: 3 cards of the same rank. If more than one player has a high hand, the higher card wins (so five kings beats five queens).
